Academic success, an abiding community spirit, and the fervent commitment of teachers and advisors have prepared the 2009 graduating class to face their futures with confidence and courage, said speakers at the June 2009 commencement exercises.
Head of School, Bud Henrichsen and College Counselor, Nancy MacDonald presided at the exercises. Twenty seniors received their diplomas and had the highlights of their Stevenson experiences related by their teachers. "You entered Stevenson as unsteady students, but you leave us with a newfound confidence in your abilities to succeed in college and in life," said Bud Henrichsen.
The grand entrance to the New York Historical Society was the gateway to Stevenson's 2009 graduation ceremony. Parents entered the classically elegant theater and auditorium to delight in a multimedia show featuring a photo montage of graduates and music composed and performed by Stevenson students.
The crowd hushed and turned to see the graduating class file down the center aisle as Pomp and Circumstance played. In addition to presenting diplomas, the ceremony featured awards and tributes to each student. Teachers spoke about the struggles, strengths, progress and successes of each student in turn. Attendees were treated to anecdotes revealing the special qualities of each graduate.
As students received their diplomas, each addressed the audience to announce their plans for next fall. "As we know, college admissions is more and more competitive each year, but our graduating class did very well, winning acceptance into 37 different colleges and universities," said Nancy MacDonald. "The graduates have a lot to be proud of," she added.
