September 20, 2011

Mayor Michael Bloomberg issued a proclamation to honor Stevenson's 50th Anniversary and its founders Lucille and Leo Rhodes.  To recognize our celebration on that day, Mayor Bloomberg proclaimed Tuesday, September 20th, 2011 in the city of New York as:

ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON SCHOOL DAY

Office of the Mayor
City of New York
Proclamation

Whereas:   In the 21st century, the countries that lead the world in educational excellence will be the countries that lead the global economy.  Over the past decade we have invested in teachers and principals and set high standards for New York City's students, and as a result, our schools have see graduation rates climb to record-high levels, We are determined to build on all our recent progress and continue to give young New Yorkers the tools they need to succeed in college and beyond, For 50 years, the Robert Louis Stevenson School, has done just that, and we area proud to join the Stevenson Community in celebrating its rich history

Whereas:  Founded in 1961 by Leo and Lucille Rhodes, Stevenson has served generations of talented students from throughout the metropolitan area.  Its faculty and staff provide personalized instruction and an invaluable network  of mutual support for young people as they work toward their diplomas. Success at Stevenson is truly a team effort -- together, its teachers and parents help students meet their academic and social responsibilities, while encouraging them to develop a love of learning that will allow them to fulfill their potential both inside and outside the classroom.

Whereas:  In keeping with the vision of the Rhodes Family, Stevenson continues to offer a well-rounded and rigorous education, "I'm thrilled that the school is still going and changing," Lucille Rhodes recently told the West Side Spirit, and today, we commend Stevenson for both its amazing legacy and its ongoing commitment to innovation. Its future has never looked brighter, and we look forward to everything the Class of 2012 and beyond will do to uphold Stevenson's outstanding tradition.

Now therefore, I, Michael R. Bloomberg, mayor of the City of New York, in recognition of this 50th Anniversary Celebration, do hereby proclaim Tuesday, September 20th, 2011 in the City of New York as:  "Robert Louis Stevenson School Day"
